The following courses are general elective courses.
This course is designed to support students in improving their reading and writing skills through Structured Literacy Instruction. The contents of this course are aligned to Freshman English and provide students with explicit and systematic instruction that offers cumulative lessons moving from simple to complex concepts. Students will enhance their reading comprehension strategies (i.e. make connections, ask questions, visualizing), develop metacognitive strategies, and learn to independently apply graphic and semantic organizers to enhance their comprehension of a complex expository and literary text. These texts will parallel in theme or content to the other grade-level content courses. A large emphasis will be on strategies for close readings of text and citing evidence. Students will build fluency through the application of decoding and encoding strategies of multisyllabic words while learning to independently access and apply their individualized supplementary aids and accommodations to access grade-level text. Explicit morphology, semantic and syntax instruction will support student understanding of complex vocabulary and development of written and oral communication. This course is designed for students with IEPs.

The contents of this course are aligned to World Literature and provide students with explicit and systematic instruction that offers cumulative lessons moving from simple to complex concepts. Students will enhance their reading comprehension strategies of text acquisition, storage and expression, develop metacognitive strategies, and learn to independently apply graphic and semantic organizers to enhance their comprehension of a complex expository and literary text. These texts will parallel in theme or content to the other grade-level content courses. A large emphasis will be on strategies of analyzing and evaluating various text and text features and citing evidence and claims. Students will continue to build fluency through supported application of decoding and encoding strategies of multisyllabic words while learning to independently access and apply their individualized supplementary aids and accommodations to access grade-level text. Through explicit morphology, semantic and syntax instruction students will express themselves in multiple writing and speaking formats with an emphasis on constructing arguments and explanations. This course is designed for students with IEPs.

This elective non-credit bearing course would allow students the time and space to study for t hose courses they are taking in their current schedule; work on assignments and projects; and to review/remediate for courses as is needed for successful course completion and preparation.

This course is an advisory period focused on relationship building, meeting the social-emotional and career development needs of students, and designed to promote a successful transition between middle and high school. Freshman Seminar provides students with opportunities for academic enrichment and assistance, as well as the chance to improve organizational and communication skills. Additionally, a portion of the course is dedicated to a discussion of college and career choices via the Naviance platform.

This course is designed to enhance student growth mindset and reflection while learning to apply strategies to improve both academic and organizational skills. Students will identify and understand their unique learning style and how to independently apply and access supplementary aids and accommodations across content areas of learning. Students will learn how to effectively set, monitor and achieve both long and short term goals. Study Skills is designed to improve student skills with time management, organization, note-taking, test-taking, study habits, and communication. Class enrollment will not exceed 12 students. Please note that IEP carriers will have enrollment priority.
